Which means if Sky wanted to stop you using your own router, they would have forced the update.Welcome to the Digital Spy forums.

I notice my Sky router (DG834GT) has old firware, and that improvements have been made to correct for this router locking up problem when we loose connection. I have downloaded the necesary file from the net gear site and tried to updata it but it says that it is the incorect file type:mad: Has anybode else managed to flash thiers with a newer version. An update, have sorted it now thanks, had to do it the way as I found via a google searce, (Invoving a pen and a lot of nerves lol) a little more scary, bit sorted thanks, now Im on version 1.02.09 See if thats a bit more stable. Paul. ![]() It seems to be working ok, and shows the correct firmware value, now 1.02.09. I have been having problems with disconnecting in the evening too, so I thought I would look at my firmware. The version I have is 1.02.28 is this the latest version or is it worth downloading 1.02.09 My Netgear router is DG834GT-1SKUKS Any advice please. PS I have unticked the UPnP box and changed my filters back to my old wanadoo ones and I still have to unplug the power from the router before I can reconnect. So do we need to update the firmware or is it done automatically by SkyNetgear If they do it, how is this done Is it on the fly when not in use or is it done like the Sky TV boxes version by version. In practice it is unlikely that Sky will update the firmware because they are switching to a new router. Meanwhile some users have run the Netgear Recovery Utility and then loaded the latest firmware available for the retail version of the Netgear DG834GT -- which restores some facilities omitted from the Sky version. ![]() It doesnt seem to improve wireless reception -- which is probably the biggest bitch peole have about the Sky router. Well mine used to drop the connection and in doing so would Lock the router and the only way out was to power cycle it and wait ages to be reconnected. It would disconect when the noise margin got down to below 5dB, but since I put on the lastest version it now stays connected solid even down to a noise margin of 2.6dB. I use a different router, which is running the famous RouterTech.Org firmware. Its rock solid. The Sky Netgear was most unreliable. Sky Router Firmware File Upgrade Going ToI see. Is this upgrade going to happen automatically or will they send us something Thx. And why would anyone choose to upgrade to this new firmware rant mode I am flabbergasted as to why these guys would expend all that effort in trying to stop users from fully using routers which they almost certainly have paid for one way or the other (there are no free routers, just as there is no free beer). The effort would more gainfully be spent in actually improving the firmware and making it more flexible for power users, and in improving customer service. In this day and age, it is neanderthal to try and lock people into the router which you so kindly chose for them. Assuming I wantneed a router with a print server or WDS or a VPN server Assuming I actually do NOT want a wireless router, but only want a wired router Will they supply me with a router that does what I need it to do If not, why are they so keen to stop me doing so myself What do they actually gain from doing this As a business strategy it is quite ridiculous.rant mode. Did you read my answer I think it will be optional, but dont hold me to it.
